Where to Buy Colour Run Powder in the UK: What Schools Need to Know

If you have already decided to run a colour run and you are now looking for where to buy the powder, this guide covers what to look for in a UK supplier, what questions to ask before you order, and what to avoid.

What to Look For in a UK Colour Run Powder Supplier

Not all colour powder is the same, and when you are buying for a school event involving children, the stakes for getting it wrong are higher than for an adult event. Here is what matters:

EN71 Certification

This is non-negotiable for a school event. EN71 is the European safety standard for products used around children. It covers chemical safety requirements and means the powder has been independently tested and confirmed safe for use with children.

Any reputable UK supplier of colour run powder for schools will provide EN71 certification without being asked. If a supplier cannot produce it, do not buy from them regardless of the price.

Cornstarch-Based with Food-Grade Dyes

Quality colour run powder contains two ingredients: cornstarch and food-grade colourant. That is it. No synthetic fragrances, no heavy metals, no harsh chemicals. The cornstarch is the same product used in cooking, and the dyes are the same grade used in food and cosmetic products.

Cheap, unbranded powder — particularly from general marketplace listings — may not meet these standards. Always confirm the ingredients before ordering for a school event. Ask for a Safety Data Sheet. Any legitimate supplier will provide one immediately.

A Safety Data Sheet

Your headteacher will want to see safety documentation before approving the event. A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) shows the full ingredient list, any hazard classifications, and recommended handling procedures. For EN71-certified cornstarch powder the SDS will be straightforward — but you need it in writing, not just a supplier's verbal assurance.

UK-Based Customer Support

If your powder arrives damaged, short, or late, you need to be able to resolve it quickly. A supplier with UK-based support who can respond within a working day is significantly less stressful than chasing an overseas warehouse. Check whether the supplier has a contact page with a real email address or phone number, not just a contact form.

Realistic Lead Times

Colour powder for UK school events needs to arrive with enough time for you to check the order, store it correctly, and pre-portion it before the event. Order at least three to four weeks before your event date. If a supplier is quoting delivery times of two to three weeks from an overseas warehouse, factor that into your planning.

For the full ordering timeline including when to place your order relative to your event date, see our 8-week planning countdown.

How Much Powder to Order

The standard quantity for a UK school colour run is 300g per person. For most schools, this means:

School Size Powder Needed 5kg Bags
100 pupils 30kg 6 bags
200 pupils 60kg 12 bags
300 pupils 90kg 18 bags
400 pupils 120kg 24 bags

Set aside an additional 15 to 20% on top of this for the grand finale colour throw. It is better to have slightly too much than to run out during your final wave.

For the full quantity guide including how to allocate powder across stations and the grand finale, see our how much colour powder per person guide.

How Many Colours Do You Need?

Most school colour runs use five to seven colours, with one colour per station. The more colours you have, the more visually striking the event — children finishing covered in five or six different colours makes for far better photos than two or three.

A seven-colour selection gives you a full rainbow effect: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and pink. This is the most popular choice for UK school events and produces the best grand finale photos.

If budget is tight, five colours is perfectly sufficient for a great event. Four is the minimum we would recommend — fewer than that and the run starts to feel sparse.

What Does Colour Run Powder Cost in the UK?

Expect to pay £22 to £24 per 5kg bag for EN71-certified, cornstarch-based colour powder from a reputable UK supplier. That is the realistic market rate for quality powder sold in appropriate quantities for school events.

Be cautious of powder priced significantly below this range. Very cheap powder is almost always either lower quality (not cornstarch-based, not EN71-certified), sold in smaller quantities than advertised, or shipped from overseas with unreliable lead times and no meaningful UK customer support.

Your powder cost as a percentage of your total fundraising revenue should be small. A 200-pupil school spending £350 on powder and raising £4,000 is spending less than 9% of gross revenue on its biggest expense. This is not the place to cut corners to save £50.

Questions to Ask Any Supplier Before You Order

Before placing an order with any colour run powder supplier, ask these questions:

1. Is your powder EN71-certified? Ask for the certificate, not just a yes. A legitimate supplier will send it without hesitation.

2. Can you provide a Safety Data Sheet? Essential for your headteacher approval and risk assessment documentation.

3. Where is the powder shipped from? UK-warehoused stock means faster, more reliable delivery. Overseas fulfilment means longer lead times and more complex returns if something goes wrong.

4. What is your returns policy if the powder arrives damaged? Powder bags can split in transit. Know what happens if yours do before you order.

5. Do you have experience supplying schools? A supplier who regularly works with schools will understand your timelines, your safeguarding requirements, and your need for documentation. A general events supplier may not.

The Bottom Line

When buying colour run powder for a UK school event, prioritise EN71 certification and a Safety Data Sheet above everything else. Confirm the powder is cornstarch-based with food-grade dyes, check the supplier has UK-based support, and order at least three to four weeks before your event.

Do not sacrifice quality for price. The powder is your biggest cost but a small percentage of what you will raise — buying the right product from a supplier you can trust is worth the difference.
