How Much Colour Powder Do You Need Per Person? (Colour Run Calculator Guide)
Planning a colour run fundraiser is exciting until you get to the maths. Order too little and you will have a crowd of barely-dusted children wondering where the colour went. Order too much and you have blown your budget on powder sitting in storage.
The good news: working out how much colour powder you need is simple once you know the formula.
The Short Answer
Plan for 200 to 400 grams of colour powder per person.
For most school and church colour run events, 300g per person is the sweet spot. That is enough for a vivid, memorable experience without going overboard.
Since Peacock Powder comes in 5kg bags, here is how that translates to a real order:
| Participants | Light (200g/person) | Medium (300g/person) | Heavy (400g/person) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 2 bags (10kg) | 3 bags (15kg) | 4 bags (20kg) |
| 100 | 4 bags (20kg) | 6 bags (30kg) | 8 bags (40kg) |
| 200 | 8 bags (40kg) | 12 bags (60kg) | 16 bags (80kg) |
| 300 | 12 bags (60kg) | 18 bags (90kg) | 24 bags (120kg) |
| 500 | 20 bags (100kg) | 30 bags (150kg) | 40 bags (200kg) |

The 300g recommendation works well for most events, but a few factors can push you towards the light or heavy end of the range.
Number of Colour Stations
The more stations you have along the route, the more powder gets used per person. A course with three stations uses noticeably less than one with six or seven stations. If you are planning a long route with lots of colour zones, budget closer to 400g per person.
Age of Participants
Children under 10 tend to get less powder thrown at them per station than adults and teenagers. Volunteers are more careful and younger children move through faster. For primary school events with younger children, 200g per person is often plenty. For secondary school or mixed-age community events, go with 300 to 400g.
Indoor vs Outdoor
Outdoor events in open fields benefit from some buffer. Powder disperses in the wind and some always ends up on the ground rather than on participants. If you are running an outdoor event on a breezy day, add 10 to 15% to your order. Indoor events (sports halls, covered courts) are more contained, so you can stay on the lower end.
Crowd Energy
This sounds unscientific, but it matters. A highly engaged crowd where volunteers are actively throwing and participants are tossing powder at each other burns through supplies much faster than a casual walk. If you are expecting a wild, high-energy event, err on the side of more.
Whether You Are Having a Grand Finale Colour Throw
Many colour run events end with a big simultaneous colour throw where everyone tosses powder in the air at once. This single moment can use as much powder as several stations combined. If you are planning a finale throw, set aside an extra 5kg to 10kg on top of your base calculation depending on your participant numbers.
How to Distribute Colours
Once you know your total, you need to decide how many bags of each colour to order.
For a standard rainbow layout, order roughly equal amounts of each colour. We offer seven colours: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, and Pink. If you are ordering 14 bags total for a 200-person event at 300g per person, that is two bags of each colour.
For a school spirit event, you might weight your order towards your school colours. If your school colours are blue and gold, order more Blue and Yellow and less of the colours that do not match your theme.
Not sure how to split it? Our 7-Colour Variety Pack includes one 5kg bag of each colour, which makes it easy. Order multiple packs for an even distribution across all seven colours with zero thought required.
Distributing Powder from 5kg Bags
Since we sell in bulk 5kg bags rather than individual packets, here is how to get the powder from bag to participant:
At colour stations: Open the bag and pour powder into a large bowl, bucket, or tub. Volunteers scoop from the tub using disposable cups or squeeze bottles and toss or squeeze it onto runners as they pass. Cups give a big, dramatic toss. Squeeze bottles give more control and use less powder per throw.
For the grand finale: Before the event, scoop powder from bulk bags into small cups, paper bags, or zip-lock bags (one per participant). Hand these out at the finish line before the countdown. Everyone throws their cup of powder in the air at the same time.
Why bulk works out better: Buying in bulk and distributing yourself is significantly cheaper than purchasing pre-packaged 100g sachets from other suppliers. A few minutes of preparation with cups or bags saves your PTA real money that goes straight back into your fundraising total.
Do Not Forget: Order Early
Colour powder for school events sells fast in the spring as summer term events ramp up. We recommend ordering at least two to three weeks before your event date to ensure delivery and give yourself buffer for any last-minute headcount changes.
We offer free shipping on all UK orders. Most orders arrive within two to three working days.
Quick Reference: Order Size by Event Size
If you just want a fast answer, here is a simple guide for medium coverage (300g per person):
- 50 participants → 3 bags (15kg)
- 100 participants → 6 bags (30kg)
- 150 participants → 9 bags (45kg)
- 200 participants → 12 bags (60kg)
- 300 participants → 18 bags (90kg)
- 400 participants → 24 bags (120kg)
- 500 participants → 30 bags (150kg)
